A short introductory article which I wrote couple of years ago on the nature of TIME.

Time is one of the most fundamental and poweful creations of nature. Time making us older in every tick. Though we know it is there, its nature at a fundamental level keeps on inspiring generations of thinkers, scientists and philosphers to understand the nature of time at a deeper level. So "What is Time"? PERHAPS TIME DOES NOT HAVE ANY NOTION AT A DEEPER LEVEL.
In reality every moment is new. New moments are continously created. We all are contantly moving towards new moments. The old moments are merely a part of memory or past. So what governs the moments?.......... It is TIME one of the most fundamental creation of nature and indeed the powerful.
First, it is important to understand the meaning of time. We can say in general Time is something which defines a change. However, it has a fundamental significance which I shall discuss later in next sections. In this section I shall explain the time perceived by our body or say our senses. So let us start with time related to our body or senses (caution; it is not a fundamental nature of time). Sometime, when we are busy we feel that time is running faster and sometime, if we sit idle or if we are in bad moments we feel time is running slower. However, time on the clock always runs at the same rate in both cases. So in different situations our brain has a different feeling of time. This is called psychological arrow of time and it is is not a true nature of time but an illusion perceived by our brain.
There is another classification of time called biological arrow of time. Our body has an internal clock which synchronises all biological processes occuring in our body. A good example is ageing. With time we all are getting older. The sign of ageing gradually appears on our body and depicts our age. Ageing is controled by our biological clock. Interestingly, the are people who seems younger naturally than their age (without using any anti-ageing products). It is because their biological clock which governs ageing runs slower. Both psychological time and biological time depend
on our body and DNA. None of them fundamental in nature, for example by slowing down your psychologcal time in bad moments you cannot slow down the actual time on the clock. In the following paragraphs I will outline the most fundamental nature of time known at present.
Time in modern physics: Fundamental Time governs the evolution of the universe. According to Newton Time was considered as an unintrupted, unperturbed physical paramaters which flows in one direction. Therefore in Newton 's point of view, time is absolute and it cannot be affected. However, 178 years after Newton, a young scientist Albert Einstein proposed a theory called Special Theory of Relativity which predicted that time is not an absolute quantity. It is relative and it can be slow down. It is the speed of light which is absolute. No one can ever move with or greater than the speed of light, this is the fundamental restriction by nature. Speed of light is always constant in vacuum no mater if observer is moving or stationary. This is the fundamental postulate of special relativity. Nature makes adjustments in space and time in order to keep light speed constant. This makes space and time dependent on each other. Ten years later Einstein published a most remarkable thery of Space and Time called General Theory of Relativity. Theory is based on equivalence principle which states that accelration and gravity are equivalent. The advanced mathematical structure of the theory tells us that space and time are geometrical quantities forming a four dimensional space. This four dimentional space can be wrapped with the presence of gravity or motion. Accoring to Einstein; Time actually slows down in the presence of gravity and in a fast moving train or aeroplane. Which means that if you are in a strong gravitational field you will age slowly with respect to someone in less intense gravitational field. Or if you are moving fast your clock will run slower with respect to a stationary clock. But how fast is fast. In principle any degree of motion can slow down clock but in order to observe this effect the speed should be close to the speed of light which is 300000000 meter/second. A speed closer to the speed of light is not possible to attain through any spaceship built at present. However, Einstein 's predictions have been varified in percision experiments with photons and elementary particles moving close to the speed of light.
Time in quantum physics- another modern view: Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory which explains microscopic world of elementary particles, atoms, photons and molecules. In a fundamental sence quantum mechanics predicts that time is something which governs the evolution of a definite energy state. For example consider an isolated atom in the ground state. The ground state of the atom seems stationary (not changing in space with time), infact its phase evolves with time and the rate of evolution depends on the energy of the ground state. Higher is the energy faster is the evolution. Such an evolution appears in the form of temporal phase of the quantum state. In general, time is a generator of energy in quantum mechanics. Energy and time are strongly related. Energy cannot be defined without involving time and time cannot be defined without involving energy. Another example is the energy time uncertainity which states that energy and time both cannot be measured simultaneously with an unprecendented percision. This principle further signifies their union. If something has energy it must evolve; this is one of the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics.
